A nursery built by a horticulturist, for a place she loved.
Janet Davis trained as a horticulturist and spent years working in gardens that lacked native plants, and the biodiversity that comes with them. She decided this corner of Rappahannock County deserved a native nursery, one that could serve all of Virginia and the wider Mid-Atlantic.
The story.
Hill House grew out of Janet's backyard propagation beds in 1998. Twenty-eight years and 500+ species later, every plant we sell is still grown here, from regional genetics, by hand, without chemical pesticides.
We sit on the Eldon Farms property in the Blue Ridge foothills: a working ecosystem of pastures, woodlands, and now, a few acres of nursery rows. It's where the plants we sell were chosen, and it's where they all started.
Today the work is the same as it was in year one, choose plants that belong here, grow them well, and put them in the hands of people who'll plant them right. We're a small team. Janet's still on the property most days.
What we believe.
Propagated, not trucked
Every plant is grown here from seed, cutting, or division. No box-store middle-stops, no out-of-state genetics.
Local ecotypes only
Our seed comes from the Blue Ridge and Piedmont. The plants you take home already know your soil.
Honest answers
If something won't work on your site, we'll tell you, even if it costs us the sale. That's how we've lasted 28 years.
