Bottlebrush Buckeye

Aesculus parviflora

Bottlebrush buckeye is one of the great native shrubs. a large, bold plant that puts on a show from early July with upright white flower spikes 8–12 inches long, each one packed with flowers that have prominent protruding stamens giving them that distinctive brushy texture. Hummingbirds and long-tongued bees work through them systematically. The tropical-looking palmately compound leaves stay handsome and pest-free all season. It spreads by suckers to form broad colonies. a single plant can become a thicket 15 feet wide over years, making it ideal for large spaces, woodland edges, and slopes where you want a no-care, statement-scale native planting. Fall color is warm yellow. Plant it where you can give it room and step back.
