Do you have a back patio that you’ve always thought about landscaping, but have never gotten around to it? The Exceptional Patio Garden Package is a low maintenance, fool proof way to guarantee an endless colorshow for you and your guests to enjoy all patio season long. Designed around an average-sized backyard patio, this garden design and palette may be easily adapted for use around a backyard deck as well. Perfect for the outdoor entertainer, this package places an emphasis on vigorous, long-lived species, ensuring prolific blooms from mid-spring through late fall. It’s time to turn your patio into a backyard oasis!

Species Attributes and Seasonality

The flowering season begins the first week of May as tall spikes of white and blue flowers adorn the lime-green foliage of false indigos that remains attractive and full all season long. Soon after, the purplish-pink blooms of Bradbury’s monarda, the white tubular flowers of penstemon ‘Husker red’ and orange butterfly weed carry the garden through May and into mid-June. The sweet scent of sweetbay magnolia blossoms fills the air by mid-June as the florets of pale purple coneflower form and attract a wide array of butterflies. By mid-July, the 18 inch-long flowers of bottlebrush buckeye will astound your guests as it blooms alongside pink Phlox ‘Jeana’: the 2024 perennial of the year. Sweet black eyed susan, a taller, showier and later flowering black eyed susan starts in early-August and continues flowering into November. Autumn is heralded by the explosive display of Solidago ‘Fireworks’ alongside the bright purplish-blue rays of New England aster.

Site Selection

The plant species in this package are deer resistant, hardy, reliable and showy species that will excel in any site with moderately well drained soils, in partial to full sun. We provide several substitution options for a selection of species in this package to ensure that you may customize the Exceptional Patio Garden Package to suit your specific design preferences and site conditions. The sweetbay magnolia included in the package is a nursery favorite due to its lengthy bloom period, sweet smelling flowers and tropical look; place it somewhere in the design where you and your patio guests can enjoy its fragrance wafting through the air.
