Skyline Drive Package

All species in this package have been collected and recorded in the official floristic inventory for Shenandoah National Park. This woodland shade garden package utilizes a handful of the most garden worthy species from the park to delight the gardener in all four seasons.

Spring starts off with a bang as the alternate leaf dogwood, wild geraniums and coralbells bloom from mid-April through mid-May. As Spring transitions to summer, the hydrangeas' fuzzy flowers take off, the tubular, whitish-pink flowers of penstemon beckon bumblebees and the scarlet bee balm is buzzing with hummingbirds! The pink phlox at the back of the border carries the garden from late summer into early fall as the blue and yellow of asters and goldenrods provide late-season nectar for native pollinators. As fall turns to winter, the deep red wine-colored leaves of alternate leaf dogwood and the butter yellow leaves of hydrangeas provide a fantastic fall color show.

The species and layout of this special design are deer resistant, long lived, adaptable to a variety of soil types, and most importantly, emblematic of the natural communities along Skyline Drive. Perfect for a north or east facing area of the yard, or as a foundation planting against a house, patio or pathway. This species package will perform best in partial shade to full sun with average to wet soils.
