Elliot's Bluestem

Andropogon gyrans

Elliot's Bluestem is a compact, upright native grass that earns its keep through fall and winter, when its foliage turns warm shades of orange, rust, and copper that glow in low light. It's smaller and tidier than Big Bluestem or Broomsedge, making it more versatile in designed landscapes where you want the seasonal drama without the size. Full sun and dry to average well-drained soils are where it does best. roadsides, dry meadows, and thin, sandy or rocky soils where it faces little competition from aggressive neighbors. In those conditions it's essentially care-free, requiring nothing beyond a late-winter cutback and the occasional admiration of its fall color display. Birds work the seedheads in fall, and the dense clumps provide overwintering habitat for native insects. Mass plantings on slopes or in meadow borders create a low-maintenance, high-impact seasonal display that peaks right when most ornamental plants are fading.
