White Whorled Milkweed

Asclepias verticillata

Whorled Milkweed is the most delicate-looking milkweed species, with fine, needle-like leaves arranged in whorls around the stem and flat-topped clusters of small white flowers in midsummer. The overall texture is light and airy, quite different from the bold presence of common milkweed. which makes it easier to integrate into borders and formal plantings where scale matters. The flowers are tiny but produced abundantly and are visited constantly by small native bees, wasps, and butterflies. This species tolerates dry, rocky, and sandy soil better than almost any other milkweed and spreads steadily by both rhizomes and self-seeding in suitable conditions. It's a monarch host plant, a pollinator plant, and a fine-textured design element all at once. Plant it at the front of a dry, sunny border or scatter it through a meadow planting to add lightness and movement.
