'Snow Flurries' Heath Aster blooms later than most asters. September and October. with a blizzard of tiny white flowers that cover the plant so completely it looks like it's been dusted with snow. The individual flowers are small but produced in such staggering quantity that the visual effect is dramatic at a distance. In a mass planting it creates a white foam that drifts through the fall garden like early snow. The plant spreads steadily and fills space naturally, making it one of the best native groundcovers for large sunny areas where low, spreading coverage is the goal. The fine-textured, heath-like foliage is attractive all season. When the flowers open in fall they become a butterfly congregation point, with painted ladies, sulphurs, and monarchs working the blooms until hard frost. Leave the seed heads for goldfinch and sparrows.
