Crossvine

Bignonia capreolata

Crossvine lights up fences and arbors in late spring with two-inch orange-red trumpets with yellow throats. a color combination that looks like something from a tropical garden, but is completely at home in Virginia. The flowers come in a spectacular flush over several weeks and draw early hummingbirds reliably. Semi-evergreen foliage turns purple-tinged in winter, adding season-round interest that most flowering vines can't offer. This is a tough, fast-growing vine that uses tendrils with adhesive disks to attach to almost any surface. Cut a stem in cross-section and see the cross-shaped pith that gave it its name. Excellent for quickly covering a fence, climbing a masonry wall, or draping over a pergola with seasonal drama and minimal fuss.
