Appalachian Mountain Sedge

Carex appalachica

Appalachian Mountain Sedge is native to the rocky, acidic, shaded slopes of the Appalachian Mountains. a habitat that builds drought tolerance, adaptability, and resilience into the plant's DNA. Fine, narrow, arching foliage forms delicate, graceful tufts that work beautifully as ground cover in woodland gardens, along rocky paths, and in the tough, dry, slightly acidic conditions that characterize many Appalachian-region gardens. It handles the difficult combination of shade and drought better than many more commonly offered sedges, making it a practical choice for gardeners who deal with thin, acidic soils and mature tree competition. The fine texture is refined enough for formal woodland gardens while the plant's constitution is tough enough for naturalistic plantings on slopes and rocky hillsides. Spreads slowly and reliably by short rhizomes, filling in the ground layer without ever becoming aggressive. Pair it with Mountain Laurel, Trillium, and Jack-in-the-Pulpit for an Appalachian woodland composition that looks authentic from the first season.
