Plains Oval Sedge

Carex brevior

Plains Oval Sedge is a prairie-adapted native that thrives in the dry, sunny conditions that challenge many landscape plants. Upright, medium-height tufts with flat leaf blades and distinctive oval seed scales stand out against a meadow or sunny border. It handles poor soils. sandy or gravelly. with ease, and its drought tolerance makes it one of the more versatile native sedges for open, sunny situations. Unlike most sedges, this one prefers sun over shade, making it useful in meadow plantings, roadside naturalizations, and sunny rain garden perimeters. Plant it in drifts with other prairie grasses and forbs for a naturalistic, low-input planting that holds soil and supports wildlife through the season. Songbirds use the seeds in fall. The fine texture adds movement and contrast to heavier-textured prairie plants without needing any supplemental irrigation once established in well-drained soil.
