Creeping Sedge

'Bunny Blue' is a cultivar of native Creeping Sedge selected for its distinctly blue-gray foliage, a color that shifts and shimmers in shade, contrasting beautifully with the darker greens of hostas, ferns, and woodland flowers. The blades are narrow, arching, and semi-evergreen, holding color well through mild winters and re-emerging fresh in early spring. Use it as a ground cover under deciduous trees, in containers on a shaded porch or patio, or woven through perennial beds as a textural counterpoint to broader-leaved shade plants. It spreads by short rhizomes to form a dense, weed-suppressing mat without becoming invasive. The blue tone reads differently in different lights: almost silver in bright shade, deeper blue-green in deeper shadow. This is one of the most versatile and visually interesting native ground covers for shade, and it requires almost no care once established. Cut it back to a few inches in late winter to refresh the foliage.
