Leaven's Sedge

Leaven's Sedge is one of the small, mat-forming sedges that does the unglamorous but essential work of a native ground layer. Low, fine-textured, and tough, it spreads slowly to cover bare soil under trees, along path edges, and in the semi-shaded spots where maintaining a lawn is a constant battle. It handles mowing at 3–4 inches remarkably well, making it useful as a lawn alternative for dappled-shade areas. Left unmowed, it stays tidy at 6–12 inches with a soft, slightly arching habit that moves nicely in a breeze. The tiny spring flower spikes are botanically interesting up close but not showy. the appeal here is texture and function, not bloom. Plant it densely (8–10 inches apart) for the fastest ground-cover effect, or scatter it more loosely and let it fill in naturally. Either way, once established it reliably outcompetes many weeds in shaded conditions without any help from you.
