Sallow Sedge is an excellent wet-site native with a distinctive feature that sets it apart from most sedges: large, hop-like seed sacs that form in dense, cylindrical clusters along the stems in summer. These fat, pebbly seed packets are genuinely eye-catching up close. each one a perfect little vessel. and they persist into fall, providing high-quality seed for waterfowl and songbirds. It handles the challenging conditions of sunny rain garden centers, stream banks, and low spots that flood seasonally with equal ease. Fast-growing once established in wet soil, it can form dense colonies that outcompete invasive wet-site plants and stabilize eroding banks. The upright form adds structure to rain garden plantings without the aggressive spread of some invasive alternatives. Use it alongside Blue Flag Iris, Soft Rush, and Swamp Rose Mallow for a wet-site planting that looks intentional from a distance and reveals impressive botanical detail close up. Cut it back to 4 inches in late winter.
