Palm Sedge

Carex muskingumensis

Palm Sedge earns its common name from the way its leaf blades radiate out from each node in a horizontal spray, creating a texture that reads almost like a tiny palm frond at the top of each upright stem. The effect is surprisingly architectural for a shade plant. planted in masses, it creates a layered, mid-height ground texture that draws the eye without demanding attention. This is a moisture-loving sedge that thrives along rain garden edges, at the base of downspouts, and in any low spot that stays reliably moist. In those conditions it spreads enthusiastically by rhizomes to form dense, weed-suppressing colonies. Native pollinators use the dense stands for nesting and shelter. In drier shade it will grow but more slowly and less vigorously. For rain gardens and wet woodland edges, though, this is one of the most useful and distinctive natives you can plant.
