Oak Sedge

Carex pensylvanica

Oak Sedge is the sedge that grows under oaks. literally. It evolved in the dappled shade and dry, acidic, root-competitive soils beneath oak canopy, which makes it one of the few plants that thrives in exactly the situation most homeowners find most difficult to plant. Under a mature red oak or white oak, in the dry zone where even lawn grass gives up, Oak Sedge spreads quietly and looks right at home. Fine-textured, low-growing, and semi-evergreen, it forms a soft carpet that can be left unmowed for a naturalistic look or maintained at 3–4 inches with occasional mowing as a lawn alternative. The color is bright green in spring, deepening slightly in summer, and holding through mild winters in most Mid-Atlantic climates. It's slow to establish from small plants. give it two seasons before expecting significant spread. Once established, it's essentially self-maintaining, competing well against weed invasion in its preferred dry-shade conditions. Plant it in drifts of at least 7–9 plants for the fastest coverage.
