Green and Gold

Green and Gold is one of the best native groundcovers for the eastern woodland garden. The southern variety australe is more freely blooming than the type. the bright yellow, five-petaled flowers appear first in spring and continue intermittently all the way into fall, much longer than most groundcovers. The semi-evergreen foliage forms a dense, low mat that crowds out weeds and keeps color in the garden even in winter. It spreads steadily by runners and fills gaps gracefully without becoming aggressive. The combination of dark green scalloped leaves and cheerful yellow flowers is always appealing, and it tolerates more shade than most flowering groundcovers. This is a low-maintenance solution for shaded slopes, woodland borders, or any spot under deciduous trees where you want year-round coverage without annual replanting.
