Brittle Bladder Fern

Cystopteris fragilis

Brittle Bladder Fern is a small, delicate fern of rocky outcrops, cliff faces, and the crevices of shaded stone walls. the kind of fern that colonizes the gaps between fieldstone steps, fills in the cracks of a dry-stacked retaining wall, and makes rocky shaded slopes look like they've been inhabited by plants for centuries. The lacy, finely cut fronds are light green and airy, forming small tufts that emerge in early spring and disappear after the first hard frost. It's not a bold plant, and it's not meant to be. Brittle Bladder Fern does the work of making small, difficult spaces feel alive and inhabited. Plant it in the crevices of a shaded stone path, in the joints of a fieldstone wall, or tucked between boulders in a shaded rock garden. In those conditions it's a natural, finding its own level without requiring anything from you. The common name 'brittle' refers to the fragile stem (stipe) that snaps cleanly when bent. a useful identification feature and a reminder to handle transplants gently.
