Native climbing hydrangea fills a gap that most shade gardeners struggle to solve: a vigorous, self-clinging vine that thrives in deep shade on trees and stone walls, producing fragrant white flower clusters in late spring that smell faintly of honey. The flowers are fully fertile, unlike the sterile cultivated hydrangea varieties, which makes them genuinely useful to pollinators. Deciduous but structural, the stems cling by aerial rootlets and create a dense mat of coverage on vertical surfaces over time. Glossy foliage is attractive through the growing season. In a mature woodland garden, decumaria climbing an old stone wall is one of the most satisfying sights in early summer.

Care notes for native climbing hydrangea.
Prefers part to full shade with moist, humus-rich soil. Water consistently until established. Provide a rough-surfaced structure or tree trunk for the aerial rootlets to grip. No pruning required; remove damaged stems in late winter. Mulch to maintain soil moisture. Slow to establish in the first year, vigorous after that.
