Tufted Hair Grass

Deschampsia caespitosa

Tufted Hair Grass earns its name from the extraordinarily fine, hair-like foliage that forms dense, evergreen tufts of dark green at the base. In late spring and early summer it sends up tall, airy panicles of tiny, shimmering flowers that catch light and shimmer above the foliage like a haze of gold. The flower display lasts for weeks, gradually transitioning to warm tan seedheads that persist through fall. It's one of the best cool-season grasses for moist, part-shaded sites. a niche where many ornamental grasses struggle. Woodland edges, moist borders, and rain garden perimeters all work well. The fine texture contrasts beautifully with broad-leaved shade plants like hostas and ferns, and the spring/early summer bloom fills the gap between early bulbs and mid-summer perennials. Cut the spent flower stems back after bloom or leave them for winter interest and songbird seed. The evergreen basal tufts look neat year-round. No staking needed; the fine-textured habit is naturally tidy.
