3-Nerve Joe-Pye Weed

Eutrochium dubium

Three-Nerve Joe-Pye Weed is the compact coastal species. shorter and tidier than its towering inland relatives, making it more manageable in typical garden settings while delivering the same monarch and butterfly attraction. The flat-topped clusters of mauve-pink flowers in late summer are every bit as attractive to pollinators as the larger species, and the three prominent leaf veins that give the plant its common name are a distinctive identifying characteristic. Plant it where you need Joe-Pye scale without eight-foot height. The cultivar 'Little Joe' selected from this species has become a well-known garden plant, but the straight species performs equally well and offers the genuine coastal ecotype genetics that support local pollinators. It's a particularly good choice for rain gardens and wet border edges along the Atlantic coast, where its native origin means it's already adapted to the local climate.
