Jim Dandy is the compact male winterberry cultivar, the smaller-scale pollinator partner for 'Red Sprite' and other smaller female winterberry varieties. While 'Southern Gentleman' pollinates the full-size female cultivars, 'Jim Dandy' is the right match when you're working with compact plantings or smaller garden spaces. One Jim Dandy can service multiple smaller females within range. It grows three to five feet tall with clean, dark green foliage and the same white summer flowers that all winterberries produce to feed native bees. It thrives in the same wet, clay, acidic conditions as all Ilex verticillata selections. If you're planting 'Red Sprite' or other small-scale female cultivars in a rain garden or foundation planting, Jim Dandy is your pollinator. Plant it within fifty feet of the females and the berries follow.

Care notes for jim dandy winterberry.
Moist to wet, acidic soil in full sun to part shade. Same requirements as other winterberry selections. Plant within 50 feet of female cultivars, especially 'Red Sprite.' Water until established; tolerates wet conditions and clay. Minimal pruning needed. Remove wayward branches in late winter if needed.
