Coral honeysuckle is the native vine that earns its place on every fence and trellis in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Tubular coral-to-scarlet flowers appear from spring through summer, drawing hummingbirds reliably and offering a long season of color on a structure that most gardeners want covered year-round. The blue-green foliage is attractive even without flowers. Red berries follow the blooms and persist through fall, taken by bluebirds, mockingbirds, and other frugivores. It's semi-evergreen in warmer zones and deciduous in cooler ones. Either way, it's one of the cleaner, more refined native vines available, with no invasive tendencies and minimal care requirements.

Care notes for coral honeysuckle.
Full sun to part shade, average well-drained soil. Water regularly for the first season. Prune after the main bloom to shape and encourage a secondary flush. Remove weak or crossing stems in late winter. No fertilizing needed in average soils. Tolerates drought once established.
