Lance-leaved Loosestrife

Lysimachia lanceolata

Lance-leaved Loosestrife is a native alternative to the aggressive non-native loosestrifes. it looks similar with its cheerful yellow star-shaped flowers in summer, but it's a well-behaved plant that fills a niche in moist, partly shaded garden spots without taking over. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves give the plant a fine texture that contrasts well with bold-leaved companions like cardinal flower or swamp mallow. It's particularly effective planted along the edge of a rain garden or at the base of a slope where moisture collects. The flowers attract native bees and bee flies reliably through summer. It spreads slowly by rhizomes to form a colony over time. a natural-looking drift that reads as intentional rather than wild. Notably underused in gardens given how reliably it performs in difficult moist spots.
