Northwind Switchgrass

Nothing else gives you this height, this upright form, and this much wildlife value in one plant. it's the structural native grass.

'Northwind' is the architectural grass: thick, stiff, almost structural, holding an absolutely vertical form all season without flopping or sprawling. Where most tall grasses lean and sway dramatically in the wind, Northwind stays upright, its thick blue-green blades forming a tight, column-like vase from spring through fall. It's the grass that designers reach for when they need both height and discipline in the same plant. Stands 5–6 feet tall but stays tidy, a vertical accent that competes visually with shrubs and smaller trees. Use it as a screening plant along property lines, as a bold repeat element in a large border, or as the structural spine of a rain garden. In any of those roles, it delivers four seasons of interest: blue-green columns in summer, golden tan in fall, and persistent winter structure that actually looks like it was placed there intentionally. All the ecological benefits of switchgrass, songbird seeds, native bee nesting, skipper butterfly host, in a cultivar that behaves in the landscape without constant management. Cut it back to 4 inches in late winter.
