Jacob's Ladder

Polemonium reptans

Jacob's Ladder unfurls in early spring before most woodland perennials have stirred, its fern-like ladder of paired leaflets topped by loose clusters of bell-shaped violet-blue flowers. Catch it on a cool May morning and the blooms practically glow against the dark woodland floor. This is the plant that makes a shaded corner feel intentional rather than neglected. It thrives in the dappled light beneath deciduous trees where little else will perform reliably. The foliage is handsome all season, mounding neatly and holding its color even after flowering ends. Bees find it early when little else is open, making it a critical spring food source. Divide clumps every few years to keep them vigorous and you'll always have plants to tuck into new spots.
