Downy Skullcap

Scutellaria incana

Downy Skullcap is one of the native mint-family plants that most people walk past without recognizing, then stop to look at more carefully when they notice the small, tubular blue-purple flowers clustered along the upper stems in midsummer. The flowers are shaped like tiny helmets. the 'scutellum' (Latin for a small dish) refers to the ridge on the calyx that gives the genus its name. The whole plant is softly hairy and gray-green, with toothed, egg-shaped leaves and a relaxed, branching habit that works well in naturalistic borders and woodland edges. Downy Skullcap blooms from July through August. a window that fills in after spring bloomers and before the fall aster rush. Bumblebees are the primary pollinators, working the flowers reliably throughout the bloom period. The plant is more drought tolerant than many native mints, adapting to dry woodland edges and lean, average soils without supplemental water. It doesn't spread aggressively, stays tidy without staking, and is completely ignored by deer.
