Stickly goldenrod is a compact, shade-tolerant goldenrod that fills the woodland edge and part-shade garden niche where other goldenrods won't perform. It grows in rocky, moist woodland soils in its native range, a different habitat than the open-meadow goldenrods that tend to dominate native plant discussions, and brings the same critical fall nectar and pollen value to shadier, more confined garden situations. The raceme-style flower arrangement (flowers along one side of the stem, hence 'racemosa') gives it a slightly different texture from plume-type goldenrods, and the compact size makes it easier to integrate into smaller borders and naturalized areas under trees.

Care notes for stickly goldenrod.
Part shade to full shade in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Much more shade-tolerant than most goldenrods. Cut back in fall or early spring. Spreads by rhizomes slowly in good conditions. excellent for naturalizing in shaded edges. No fertilizing or staking needed.
