Winterthur is the compact, refined cultivar of smooth viburnum, selected at the famous Winterthur Garden in Delaware for better garden performance than the straight species. It stays more contained, the branching is tidier, and the fall berry show is exceptional. The berries ripen through four color stages simultaneously: pink, rose, blue, and near-black all hanging on the same cluster at once, a display that's genuinely unlike anything else in a fall garden. Plant two or more together for the best berry set; the cross-pollination between plants produces dramatically more fruit. Bluebirds find the berries immediately in fall migration. The fall leaf color is deep burgundy-red. This is the viburnum for a polished garden border where you want guaranteed performance and visual impact from summer through late fall.

Care notes for winterthur viburnum.
Moist, slightly acidic soil in full sun to part shade. Full sun maximizes berry production and fall color. Plant at least two individuals for cross-pollination. Water consistently the first growing season; tolerates wet soils. Minimal pruning needed. Remove wayward branches in late winter only if needed.
