Wisteria, species

Wisteria frutescens

American wisteria does everything the invasive Asian wisteria does. only it stays in bounds. In late spring, cascades of fragrant lilac-purple blooms drape over fences, arbors, and pergolas, stopping neighbors mid-walk. The scent carries on warm afternoons. Bumblebees work the flowers constantly, and ruby-throated hummingbirds make regular passes starting in May. Unlike its notorious Asian relatives, this species blooms reliably without aggressive spread, and it cycles again in late summer with a secondary flush. The foliage turns gold in fall, and the vining stems weave a textural tapestry through winter. Plant it where you want a vertical anchor. on a sturdy structure, not a tree. and let it do the heavy lifting for years without demanding much in return.
